Officials unearth 37-year-old time capsule at community-funded helipad in Barstow
“In 1984, Barstow Community Hospital faced a potentially life-threatening problem.
California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s helicopters had been flying to the hospital about four to eight times a month with critically ill patients, or vials of blood, but they hadn’t been landing at an approved site.
Without such a site, the state could request an injunction that would stop the emergency landings, the Desert Dispatch reported at the time.
Aware of the threat, the Barstow City Council approved a $15,000 plan to build a helipad. The only problem: The bare-bones plan came with no aviation lights — which meant night landings were off — and would have consisted of just a grass surface.” (vvDailyPress.com)
